Further clerical buildings on Vársziget and the neighbouring islands

On Vársziget and in the vicinity several buildings stood once, some of them are clerical ones from the 9-13th centuries. Of these only the ruins of the basilica on Récéskút island are open to the public.

The church of St. John the Baptist

Its remains were found next to the martyr Adrian’s church during the archaeological excavations. It was built around 840., when Priwina settled down in the area. It is presumably the first Christian church in the Transdanubia in the Frankish era.

The building was built of wood, the remains of the wooden columns holding the whole structure revealed its ground plan. The baptizing basin could have been placed in the middle of the building.

The remains were reburied after they had been excavated, plans are being made to exhibit them to the public.

The ruins of the basilica on Récéskút island

The three-aisled church sectioned with its three inscribed apses, and moreover with a gallery and a staircase turret at its western terminal was built after the middle of the 9th century, and it was presumably reconstructed at the end of the same century, or possibly in the 10th century. Its clerical raison d’etre in the Árpádian Age can emphatically be presumed.During the 14th century it laid in ruins. A fortified manor house, which became the possession of the Rozgonyi family in 1442, was built on its remains at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. It was completely abandoned in the 16th century.

The church of the manor house dating to the 9th century on Borjúállás island

The fenced manor house of one of the dignitaries of Priwina’s court was excavated on the island (nowadays under water) to the south-east of Vársziget. An adjacent church was built from wood, the floor of which was covered with bricks carried here from ruins of Roman buildings. Around the church the graves of a cemetery from the 9-10th centuries were found. The maquettes of the manor house and the church are exhibited in the Göcsej Museum in Zalaegerszeg.

Zalavár – Kövecses

On the island south of Vársziget a village and its small-sized semi-circled church dating to the 9th century and the Árpádian Age were excavated, with a cemetery around it. The church was reburied after having been excavated.

The church of Alsóbáránd

The name of the village Alsóbárándpuszta near  Esztergályhorváti and several buildings from the modern age on the north-western border of the storage lake, along the road towards Zalaapáti cherish the memory of the Medieval village belonging to the abbacy in the past. The later-destroyed village was located to the east of the present puszta, on the edge of the valley. The church of the village built in the 12th-13th centuries was reburied after the excavations.
