The Millennium Monument

To becomingly commemorate the millennium of the county’s foundation, we constructed the Millennium Monument designed by Imre Makovecz, the Ybl award-winning architect who was raised in Zala. Its foundation stone was laid in the neighbourhood of the underground ruins of the former bailiff’s keep on 14th June, 2009.

Inside the monument , from 2011 on visitors can behold the “Life-tree” dreamt and designed by  Imre Makovecz, which has 258 leaves, amounting to the settlements of Zala county.

On the trunk of the Life-tree can be found the carved figures of the three persons who played a key role in the foundation of the county, chief Bulcsú, king Stephen and the bailiff Kolon.

The top of the monument displays the ancient Székely-Magyar symbols, the Sun and the Moon, and the Cross symbolizing our Christian roots.

The building does not function solely as a monument but also provides venue for numerous events and exhibitions, so it is worth visiting all through the year.

It was constructed by ZÁÉV Zrt. construction company, and the inauguration took place on 11th September 2010, on Saint Adrian’s Family Day.
